Michigan Mask Donation Center

Detroit Sewn recently partnered with Glamorous Moms Foundation to launch a Volunteer Command Center for DIY Sewn Masks during Covid-19. The center was open for eight weeks, March 30, 2020 to May 28, 2020 and served individuals, families, and organizations in the community who were in dire need. The center offered free masks to the public and free fabric to home sewer volunteers, as well as curbside service. The center was located at 71 N. Saginaw in downtown Pontiac.

The 8 week initiative allowed for:

* Receipt of 100% fabric donations
* Receipt of donated DIY masks from at-home sewers that have been pre-washed using hot water
* Pickup of free DIY masks in packs of 10 to community groups in dire need

This was a 100% volunteer initiative. Fabric donations and DIY masks were dropped off curbside between the hours of 12-4 pm, Monday through Friday. Donors were asked to pull up in front of the building, beep their horns, and our GMF volunteers ran out to accept the donated goods.

Those in need of 100% cotton fabric to sew masks were also invited to park, honk and let volunteers know what they needed and fabric was dispersed based on availability.

During the 8 week initiative, no one other than representatives from Detroit Sewn or Glamorous Moms Foundation was allowed in the building. All volunteers were equipped with masks and gloves to wear for intake and handoff of goods.

Together, we passed out 7,050 masks in total to 390 families, individuals, businesses, and local non-profit organizations.
